Check out this service based off social media: We Are Hunted. Basically, the site uses Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace comments (along with other networks and BBs) to scientifically track and rank the 99 most popular songs and artists.
I’m not sure if I think this site is very cool or rather disturbing — after all, do I want my musical tastes fed into a machine for the delectation of others (even completely anonymously)? And do I want to follow the herd, glomming on to what others think is really hot right now? (Actually, the answer is no, as I am not cool enough to listen to at least half of the artists mentioned.)
That aside, this is a great example of how social media can be harnessed to help people stay in touch with pop culture…and buy music.
